The Elmhurst College men’s lacrosse team cruised passed Carthage College, 21-9, at Langhorst Field, for the CCIW semi-final championship win Wednesday night, May 1.
The Bluejays came out hot scoring the first five goals of the game and held Carthage scoreless until the 1:26 mark in the 1st quarter. Freshman Andrew Frerich added two goals, sophomore Ty Funderburk added three goals, and junior Dan O’Connell added a goal to put EC up 6-1 at the end of the 1st.
Frerich and sophomore Marcus Yandall scored early in the 2nd quarter to push the lead up to 8-1. Funderburk scored again at 9:19 to increase the lead to 9-1 over Carthage.
The Bluejays held off the Red Men until 6:30 in the 2nd quarter, but the Red Men fought back by scoring three straight goals. EC added another goal before the end of the quarter, but Carthage countered a goal with 14 seconds left in the half. The score was 11-6 going into halftime.
EC and CC went back and forth for the first nine minutes of the 3rd quarter until O’Connell scored at 2:54 to put the Bluejays up 15-8. Within the last 15 seconds of the quarter EC scored two goals. Funderburk snagged a Carthage pass and assisted a behind the shoulder goal by senior Mac Harden. Funderburk then added another goal to put the Bluejays up 16-8 at the end of the 3rd.
“Staying attentive to the task at hand and not getting carried away with emotions ensures our play will beat their [Carthage’s] play, plain and simple,” explained Harden.
The Bluejays’ rally continued into the 4th quarter as Harden and freshman Cullen Nordeman upped the score to 18-8. Carthage only scored one goal in the remaining quarter of the game. EC kept their foot on the gas and added three more goals to the scoreboard.
“Our goal is to make a statement to the rest of the conference that we are a true threat and hungry for a championship and will be for years to come,” said Funderburk.
The 21-9 victory earned the men’s lacrosse team a trip to the CCIW Championship against Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, May 4. This is the first appearance in the CCIW Men’s Lacrosse Championship in EC’s men’s lacrosse program history.
