Coming off a loss on Wednesday, January 23, the Elmhurst College women’s basketball team dropped a tight game at home, 79-72, to Millikin University on Saturday, January 26. The team now sits with eight wins and 11 losses on the season, with four wins and six losses in CCIW conference play.

After starting off slow, the BlueJays finished off the first quarter trailing by six points, Millikin playing disciplined in their own zone. At the end of the half, the BlueJays stormed back to lead the Big Blue 44-33, with Millikin only scoring 11 points in the second quarter.

EC did not drop the lead throughout the entire third quarter, ahead 60-52 with 10 minutes left to play. With the BlueJays hitting 42.9% of their field goals, they were able to stay committed to clean play and hold on to a commanding lead through 20 minutes of play.

But in the fourth quarter, the Big Blue took a three-point lead, 68-65, with under four minutes left. The BlueJays took 11 personal fouls in the fourth quarter alone, never once hitting double digits in fouls through the first three quarters. With much of Millikin's points coming from the free throw line, the Big Blue were able to hang on late and beat the BlueJays in a comeback win, 79-72.

Senior Kellee Clay lead the team with a 66.7% field goal percentage, and sophomore Kelly Weyhrich had six assists and two rebounds to help the team expand on their lead throughout the middle of the game. Despite the loss, the BlueJays hung in with the Big Blue in almost every category and played a solid all-around game.

EC will take on Augustana College in Rock Island on Thursday, January 31, and are back home in Faganel Hall Saturday, February 2, to face Wheaton College.
