U.S. and Russia reach agreement on ceasefire in Syria

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the United States and Russia have reached a deal to organize a ceasefire in Syria.

This deal calls upon the Syrian government to respect a nationwide ceasefire with the al-Nursa and ISIS opposition groups. This ceasefire would be primarily aimed at the air raids and bombings executed by the Syrian government’s air force.

According to CNN, negotiations between Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had fallen apart in February, leaving the fate of Syria up in the air.

The ceasefire is set to be put into effect by sundown on Monday, Sept. 12, according to a CNN report.
